The Advent Christian Campground in Alton Bay was founded in 1863, making it the oldest camp association in New England. It began on four acres of land leased from the Boston and Maine Railroad and eventually expanded to 78 acres.
In the late 1800s, most campers lived in tents and held religious services in a pine grove at the center of the grounds. Over time, cottages were built, and by 1945 there were over 400. Before a major fire in 1945, the campground also had a Tabernacle, Book Store, Bakery, Boarding House, and Store. The fire destroyed the Tabernacle and Book Store.
Another fire in 1967 destroyed the Boarding House and Store, but much rebuilding has taken place since then.
The Alton Bay Campmeeting Association was officially incorporated in 1876. Over time, they built a large tabernacle, a central kitchen, and a bakery. An ice house on Back Bay stored ice cut each winter for summer use. The campground continued to grow and thrive, hosting summer camp meetings, conferences, and youth retreats.
Our cottage, which we call Beacon Bay Retreat, is located within the historic Alton Bay Campground. Nestled among the trees and just a short walk from the lake, it offers a peaceful place to relax while being part of a vibrant and welcoming community. Surrounded by the charm and tradition of the campground, Beacon Bay Retreat serves as a comfortable getaway where we can enjoy the beauty of nature, take part in summer gatherings, and experience the rich history of this special place.
